Dare to be different? Thrift. (Shady Tip #4)

I went thrifting recently, and I did my best to be picky, but it’s hard when you find so many vintage and affordable pieces all under one roof. Welcome to thrifting.

I am going to break thrifting down in two posts, since there is so much to it. My favorite go-to places to go thrifting are Plato’s Closet and Udelco in Hawthorne, NJ. Both have so many options and the places have tons of variety of shoes, different clothing items and accessories. We all are obsessed with trends, but you can’t go wrong with a few thrift items that seem to always come back in style.

Here are some tips to consider before thrifting, because again, if you are beginning to look into it, make sure you mentally prepare yourself, because it can be draining.

Thrifting helps you experience a lot of your style and taste in fashion, it is also the perfect time to experiment on new pieces. Don’t ever go to the thrift just to get basics, try something new.

There may be a lot more questions about thrifting, so next post will be about my personal items that I have bought from thrifting so stay tuned!

Brunch & Shades (Shady Tip #3)

Hoping that everyone had a great holiday over the past week! On top of enjoying turkey and plates on plates of food, I worked and also did a lot of shopping….. and I mean A LOT. I also went brunching, and one thing for sure I realized, brunch outfits have to be one of my favorites.

LETS TALK ABOUT THIS.

It’s only in these occasions that you can wear a furry jacket with a colorful top, crazy hairstyle, big earrings and heels without feeling too overdressed. Nothing goes better together than some Ray-bans and New York. On the left my friend has on large aviators, with a gold frame and brown gradient lens.

Gradient means that the lens color starts with a darker shade at the top and going down the lens. My shades on the right, I have on Ray-ban hexagons with a gold frame, size large, in a brown polarized lens. Both wearing brown, an essential Fall color, had to add that touch in the outfit with tan and beige colors.

When it comes to dressing up for brunch, especially when going into the city, you need to look at something vibrant in your outfit that can pop out. You can say for my friend on the left, her touch was adding on the gradient lenses, very popular. Aviators from Ray-ban have been around for decades and have still stayed relevant in the sunglass industry.

My vibrant piece, involves a few. My pink earrings, my floral crop top, furry coat, and hexagon shades. I wanted to go all out. See how everything meshes together flawlessly, where the colors are kept at the top half of my outfit and everything else is a basic brown or tan color. It’s important to have basics in your wardrobe because you need to balance every outfit you wear. You can still make a statement with one piece of clothing or accessory.

Now when you compare both outfits you can see the two acceptable versions of brunch, the more casual and the more vibrant. Both still killing it.

Mimosas are cool and all, but my Ray-ban shades keep me cooler…. so get yours in store! Another Christmas gift below for my readers….

How do we figure out your style?

Style can come in different ways, think about the colors you like wearing, or the patterns and brands you obsess over. Then ask yourself these questions below:

Which do you prefer vibrant or chic? – I prefer chic, only because there’s a lot more to work with and it’s more comfortable to wear for me.

How does your everyday style look like? – Black jeans, hair in a low ponytail, a pair of Ray bans, apple watch, pair of Nike, cool shirt, fancy hat to match with a nice purse, and hoop earrings.

Heels or flats? – Heels. I love me a nice pair of uncomfortable Steve Maddens.

Sneakers or boots? – Sneakers. Have gained an obsession with sneakers lately.

Whose wardrobe would you swap with? Anaya Ivy or Beyonce. Both show strong and confidence in their styles.

What is your favorite color to wear? – Black. It goes with everything and anything.

Favorite store to shop at? Store you would love to shop in if everything was free? Favorite store is New York & Company and I would love to shop in Zara if everything was free.

What is your go to updo? Low ponytail, it looks sleek and gives my face a good structure.

Write your own answers down and really get to know yourself into figuring out your likes. This is the first step to figuring out your style. Always remember that no one knows you better than yourself, especially when it comes to fashion.

WELCOME

HEY!

Welcome to the Catch Some Shade & Spill Some Tea! This is for my sunglass lovers, collectors, fanatics, fashionistas, stylists, and trendsetters. You all are here for a reason, and just like me we have an obsession over shady things.

First things, my name is Gabriela Lora, your fellow quirky and goofy trendsetta! I’m a senior reaching the very end of my college career and on the side I do have an obsession over style and trend.

Working in the sunglass industry can be overwhelming. The market is growing and there are so many new tech lenses, frame materials, and trends coming out. Keeping up with all of it can be a lot, but this blog makes it easier for anyone who wants updates on the one thing they love the most, sunglasses!

Do yourself a favor, and with all of the twists and turns that life throws at you, remember to unwind from time to time and dress and do the things you love.

In the words of Gianni Versace,

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.”

Shady Beginner’s Tips #1

What do you really know about your frame?

What’s beautiful about people, is that we all come in different, shapes, colors, sizes, and backgrounds. Although some of us are set back from society’s views on the perfect looking people, sunglasses have no judgement. Sunglass shopping is a free judgement environment.

You can find any different type of frame, shape, style in any brand. I am a very blunt person when it comes to my opinion on style and trend. The question that we all may think about before walking into a sunglass store, or we type in to google to shop for sunglasses online is, what is my frame?

Don’t freak out, you don’t need a sunglass expert to know how your face looks.

  1. If you have worn sunglasses and find that they are touching your cheek bones a lot. Congrats, you’re a model. Seriously though, you have high cheek bones so invest in some sunglasses with nose pads! (Nose pads prevent sunglasses from bothering your nose too much and sitting on your face too harshly or too loosely).
  2. If you find that sunglasses bother your temples a lot. You have a round face like me. So please look into Gucci, Versace, or Prada sunglasses that have a large variety of sunglasses that fit all face sizes. Don’t feel like your head is too big, it’s just that some sunglasses are too small. Ray-Ban actually sells a lot of different sunglasses that come in different sizes from small to large. You’re welcome big heads.
  3. This is for everyone on planet earth. CAT EYE or LARGE CAT EYE shaped sunglasses, fit any face shape possibly. There is not one person I have met that looked ridiculous with a cat eye frame, and they come in many different sizes. (I prefer my large cat eye sunglasses, because again, I have a round face).
  4. Do not get butterfly shaped sunglasses if you have an oval shape or overall small face. You will look like you had a very long night and trying to hide a 3-day hangover.
  5. Last but not least, get aviator or pilot shaped sunglasses if you have a strong jaw-line, the shape automatically softens your face shape up.

This is a judgement free environment, and remember just because one person may look amazing with shields doesn’t necessarily mean you will, even though they are very cute. Be honest with yourself and know that there are many other shapes, sizes, and styles of sunglasses all over the world. There is enough to go around for everyone.

Quality is Quantity, so pay for what you know you deserve. You won’t get quality sunglasses if you let other people do the shopping for you. Make sure you know your face!
