Shady Beginner’s Tips #1

What do you really know about your frame?

What’s beautiful about people, is that we all come in different, shapes, colors, sizes, and backgrounds. Although some of us are set back from society’s views on the perfect looking people, sunglasses have no judgement. Sunglass shopping is a free judgement environment.

You can find any different type of frame, shape, style in any brand. I am a very blunt person when it comes to my opinion on style and trend. The question that we all may think about before walking into a sunglass store, or we type in to google to shop for sunglasses online is, what is my frame?

Don’t freak out, you don’t need a sunglass expert to know how your face looks.

  1. If you have worn sunglasses and find that they are touching your cheek bones a lot. Congrats, you’re a model. Seriously though, you have high cheek bones so invest in some sunglasses with nose pads! (Nose pads prevent sunglasses from bothering your nose too much and sitting on your face too harshly or too loosely).
  2. If you find that sunglasses bother your temples a lot. You have a round face like me. So please look into Gucci, Versace, or Prada sunglasses that have a large variety of sunglasses that fit all face sizes. Don’t feel like your head is too big, it’s just that some sunglasses are too small. Ray-Ban actually sells a lot of different sunglasses that come in different sizes from small to large. You’re welcome big heads.
  3. This is for everyone on planet earth. CAT EYE or LARGE CAT EYE shaped sunglasses, fit any face shape possibly. There is not one person I have met that looked ridiculous with a cat eye frame, and they come in many different sizes. (I prefer my large cat eye sunglasses, because again, I have a round face).
  4. Do not get butterfly shaped sunglasses if you have an oval shape or overall small face. You will look like you had a very long night and trying to hide a 3-day hangover.
  5. Last but not least, get aviator or pilot shaped sunglasses if you have a strong jaw-line, the shape automatically softens your face shape up.

This is a judgement free environment, and remember just because one person may look amazing with shields doesn’t necessarily mean you will, even though they are very cute. Be honest with yourself and know that there are many other shapes, sizes, and styles of sunglasses all over the world. There is enough to go around for everyone.

Quality is Quantity, so pay for what you know you deserve. You won’t get quality sunglasses if you let other people do the shopping for you. Make sure you know your face!

Create your goals and make them happen!

Fixing Your Shades 101

We all make mistakes, whether we spill juice on our clothes, or we drop food on our lap on our favorite jeans.

We also make mistakes with our sunglasses. We get a pair, we love them, and then the worst happens…

You sit on them, the lens comes off, or the temples are bent. Then we guiltily find ourselves walking back to the store having to buy a new pair or shamefully have to get them fixed after just a week of getting them. Don’t be that customer who comes in and is always breaking their shades!

Here’s a 101 on different situations and how to fix your own shades at home:

  • If the lens comes off,
  1. Pop the lens back in if it is an acetate frame from the inner corner of the frame to the outer OR if you have a metal frame, most of them have the frame screwed in so simply grab a small screw driver.
  2. Unscrew it and then easily place the lens and tighten the screw back up little by little while adjusting the frame.
  • If the frame is loose,
  1. If the acetate frame is loose tighten the ends of the temple by stretching it in
  2. Use a hairdryer to warm up the front of the frame and then bend it in little by little, DON’T OVERDO IT, it can break
  • If it’s a metal frame,
  1. Bend the front of the frame in gently
  2. Then tighten the ends in, make sure it is not uncomfortable
  3. Adjust the nose pads by bending them outwards facing your nose so it sits better on your face

These are your simple tips and tricks for adjusting your frames, also keep in mind that there is warranty on some brands and free adjustments at local eyeglass stores like LensCrafter and Sunglass Hut! Ask them for more details on their policies.

20/20 Vision – New Trends Alert!

What are some new catches for the new year? A lot that’s in right now is transitioning into the spring. From color, patterns, shapes, and new materials, things are looking a lot more different and eye-catching with the bright new seasons upon us.

These trends are affecting all collections and brands, making a statement in all areas of the sunglass world.

  • Shields are still making a huge statement in the fashion world.
  • Large cat-eye is overpassing its previous model of small cat-eye frames in popularity.
  • Angular, hexagonal, sharp-edged metal shapes are becoming the new popular Ozzy Osbourne shapes.
  • Reflective lenses are the color of the year! Bright mirrored lenses hide your eyes a lot better than transparent or gradient and people are loving it.

These trends in the sunglass market are catching many peoples’ eyes, it’s different, it’s fresh, slightly odd, but we are loving it! Go to your local sunglass store online and in store and be on the lookout for these hot pieces!

A Shady Winter – Do we really need sunglasses in the cold?

The topic of discussion, sunglasses are only needed in the Summer.

FALSE!

You need sunglasses all year round, it doesn’t matter the season, the weather, as long as there is sunlight, you are going to need a protective pair of shades.

  1. When it snows, the sun reflects off of light surfaces a lot more harshly. So this means that with white snow on the ground on a sunny winter day, without wearing shades, your eyes are being affected a lot more by the reflection of UV rays off of snow. This is more harmful than sunlight in the Spring and Summer.
  2. There is still glare from the sun no matter what time of the year it is. So polarized lenses are still needed anytime of the year. It can still ruin your vision and prevent you from seeing clearly.
  3. If you are a driver in no means, you should drive without sunglasses. They let you see the road better during the day, and a polarized lens prevents light reflecting off the windshield to affect your vision. DRIVE SAFE AND PROTECT YOURSELF!
  4. Sunglasses prevent skin cancer around the eyes, so this means that all year round with UV rays from the sun, you still have the same chances in the winter and the summer to be affected.
  5. Last but not least, global warming is real! The sun is affecting us a lot worse now than before. That means more room for dangerous UV rays to affect our eyes.

Sporty Trends and Style

The Kardashians made the skiing shields a new fashion trend for the warm Calabasas weather. Here’s to us athletes rocking more sporty styles and making them fashion!

The shields style is exactly the perfect protection for snowboarding, but more and more people are using this winter sports pair for everyday use.

You can pair up a sporty pair of Oakley’s with a vacation fit or even an everyday sporty look. This type of trend is very exciting and only the real fashion risk-takers can use it and make it their own.

A close friend of mine Mikaela Gongora, social media influencer, used a pair of Vogue Shields and Oakley shields to rock some bathing suit styles and a night out look. Pay attention to how she still kept it very sporty.

We love a good ole fashion risk, but remember that a sporty pair of shades must be styled with sporty wear!

Oakley and Vogue sunglasses are the best options for beginner sporty shades, and Oakley has different lenses for different reasons, some are more used for hiking or sports. Vogue is an up and coming brand that has realized very stylish and fun shapes and frames for young adults looking to make a statement.

Our more luxury brands, Versace and Gucci have recently released some shield-like styles that have caught us off guard. Looks like this trend will transition into 2020 collections for sure. BE ON THE LOOKOUT!

What you should know about your frames!

If you haven’t done so already, check out my Shady Beginner’s Tips posts to get caught up with what you should know before continuing on to this blog. Style has so many different areas, and the sunglass industry has stayed innovative in new types of metals and materials.

When people wear plastic sunglasses, you can tell very easily what’s from Walmart, or what’s from Versace. A pair of plastic Versace’s may have the gold accent on the side but all in all it is made out of plastic like a Walmart pair.

Now, I am not sitting here saying that majority of frames are made out of plastic, some are actually made out of a stronger form of plastic called acetate. This is what prevents a frame, especially from a luxury brand, look cheap.

Look at the classic Ray Ban wayfarer, that made James Dean and Tom Cruise look fashionable on the big screen. Not as plastic as you think, it’s acetate.

Introduced to the Aviators now, people don’t like the thin metal, but the best thing about it, is that it’s very easy to adjust, and now we have new frames like carbon fiber frames that make sunglasses more lightweight. People are starting to love these.

There’s also an aluminum Clubmaster that is slightly heavier than a classic clubmaster but is more durable. Oakley frames are damage resistant. Below are examples of these top frames taking over the sunglass industry. Remember there’s no quality under a brand name, it’s mere texture and material that makes shades quality.

The abbreviations and number are the style numbers for each pair on the chart. Go on and get your favorite frame styles NOW!

Shady Beginner’s Tip #5 (Clear up your lens!)

We all know that lenses are used for protection, 100% UV ray protection is exactly what we need, in order to wear quality on our eyes. Sunglasses have been proven to prevent skin cancer around the eyes!

With new technologies and new frame types, styles, and trends, lenses have also come out of hiding in creating a more clearer world around you.

I’m going to break it down for you;

POLARIZED lenses reduce glare from the sun. Ever find yourself driving down the highway, and you have to take your sunglasses off in order to see better because light keeps reflecting off of them? Yeah that’s glare, and polarized lenses get rid of that.

My sunglass collection consists of polarized and non-polarized lenses, and my everyday shades when going to work or school, when I know I’m going to be outside a lot, are my polarized sunglasses.

Sunglass Hut offers deals with polarized lenses so be on the lookout with the RetailMeNot app, which can update you on this! #ThanksForGivingDeals
